When a Politically Divided Family Goes on Vacation

RETIREES RICHARD AND LISA Starling are Georgia natives turned Cornell academics; their son Michael and his wife, Diane, are barely getting by in Texas; their son Thad and his boyfriend, Jake, live comfortably in Brooklyn. These family members voted for different candidates. Their experiences of religion range from solace to trauma, they have an unwritten list of topics they don’t discuss, and it takes tragedy and close confines to break open their surface-level peace and push them into the conversations they’ve been avoiding.

These characters appear in David James Poissant’s latest novel Lake Life, which is set in 2018 but explores family dynamics that feel especially relevant in 2020. Jen Hinst-White spoke with Poissant in late July, five months into COVID-19 social distancing, two months after George Floyd’s death and the resulting groundswell of protest, and three months before the national election.

What Tom Cruise’s Relationship With Daughter Suri Is Like Now

Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, known for his work in countless critical and financial successes — from Jack Reacher to the Mission Impossible franchise. But at the same time, he’s also one of the most private.

Unlike many other celebrities, Cruise generally does not talk about much beyond his professional life. This has caused a great deal of speculation about his personal life, especially in regards to his daughter Suri. However, there have been a few reports in recent years that might be able to shed light on the nature of their relationship.

Trump turned his hotels, resorts into ‘Beltway’s new back rooms,’ New York Times reports

Trump attended 34 political fundraisers at his hotels and resorts that brought in $3 million in revenue, the Times reported.

“Sometimes he lined up his donors to ask what they needed from the government,” the Times said.

Brian Ballard, a Florida lobbyist and confidant of the president, joined Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida midway through Trump’s presidency, the paper reported. Associates later said he did this because the president wanted him to “ante up,” the Times said.

Ballard dismissed any accusations questioning his membership at Mar-a-Lago, the Times reported, and called the idea, in part, “ridiculous.”

After being in cruise mode, KXIP lose by a ‘few inches’

Twenty-one needed from 17. Nine wickets in hand. How on earth do you manage to lose from here? “I have no answers,” offered skipper KL Rahul, after Kings XI Punjab, for the third time this IPL season, snuck their long hands deep down victory’s throat and retrieved defeat from its bowels.

Nearly everything had gone right for them yesterday in Abu Dhabi. Kolkata Knight Riders had chosen to bat on a fresh pitch, and found the ball was not coming on. Shubman Gill may seem out of place in T20, but his 47-ball 57 couldn’t really be faulted.

KKR desperately needed some acceleration, though, and it came from captain Dinesh Karthik, who blasted 58 off 29.

Atarget of 165 seemed bigger than it was given the pitch and the KKR attack. But the former had started to ease out, and the latter was blunted by Mayank Agarwal and Rahul.

Rugby-Exeter cruise past Bath to reach fifth straight Premiership final

Oct 10 (Reuters) – Exeter Chiefs remained on course for a domestic and European double after delivering a clinical five-try display to beat Bath 35-6 in the Premiership semi-final on Saturday.

Victory sent Exeter into the Oct. 24 Twickenham showpiece where they will meet Wasps, who defeated Bristol Bears 47-24 to reach their first final in three years.

Bath enjoyed early spells of possession in the Exeter territory but the Chiefs recovered to score from their first attacking position at Sandy Park.

Lock Jonny Hill crossed the try line in the 16th minute for the hosts before captain Joe Simmonds added the extras.

Rhys Priestland slotted home two penalties in four minutes for Bath to cut the deficit down to one point, only for Exeter to turn up the intensity from the restart.

International student enrollment down at UNLV, UNR

After learning she’d lose her government job in Wales due to COVID-19-related budget issues, 32-year-old Lorna Griffiths decided to realize her dream of studying abroad and pursuing a career change to become a nurse.

But amid the pandemic, making that happen wasn’t easy. Griffiths traveled to Iceland to get a student visa in time for fall semester. And despite having the correct paperwork in hand, she was stressed while traveling to the U.S. and was worried she’d be turned away.

But now she’s in Las Vegas and is enrolled in her first semester of classes at the College of Southern Nevada.

“I always wanted to actually study abroad somewhere and it came down to a choice between Australia and the United States,” Griffiths said, adding she’s happy to be in the U.S.

In Nevada and nationwide, many colleges and universities are seeing fewer international students this fall due to factors

THE BOMBAY High Court (HC) has refused to accept the spread of the coronavirus disease in the country as grounds to allow a Thailand national, engaged in a custody battle with her estranged husband, to relocate to Bangkok with her 12-year-old son.

A division bench of Justices A A Sayed and Abhay Ahuja last week passed the judgment on a plea filed by the woman, who is living in Mumbai with her minor son since she had separated from her husband in 2012.

In view of the controlled Covid-19 situation in Thailand, the petitioner had sought permission to relocate with her son to Bangkok, where her parents live.

She also sought that the child is allowed to join a school in that country and stay there until the custody petition was decided before a family court in Mumbai.

Senior counsel Darius Khambata, appearing for
