Australian artist and photographer Guido van Helten’s photorealistic large-scale murals have graced structures from India to Tennessee, exploring topics such as water conservation, the changing of communities, and regional traditions such as farming, wine making, and weaving. For a new commission in Greenville, South Carolina, the artist created an impactful piece to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of the city’s schools. “The concept behind this design is a culmination of 10 days of location research and community consultation—focusing on the broad theme of education in Greenville and the history, personalities, and legacies of the Integration Era—in order to find imagery symbolic of unity and diversity in modern-day Greenville,” says van Helten.
Over the course of his research trip, van Helten spoke with a diverse group of community leaders and refined the focus of the mural. “This approach opened up the concept to give voice to traditionally Black communities
Indiana is now included under Chicago’s COVID-19 Emergency Travel Order. Starting Friday, those traveling between Indiana and the city will need to quarantine for 14-days unless they’re exempt.
Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said states are added to Chicago’s emergency travel order list if they have an average of more than 15 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents daily for seven consecutive days.
The city’s website lists Indiana as currently having 20-30 new daily cases per 100,000 residents. Based on data from the Indiana State Department of Health, the state has averaged 24 new daily cases per 100,000 residents in the last week.
“Obviously the Indiana news is of significance to many people in Chicago,” Arwady said.
Hoosiers traveling to Chicago must quarantine, unless they work there. Other exceptions for permissible travel include medical care and parental shared custody. The Department of Health is urging Chicago
“Wisconsin has a very poorly controlled outbreak. Indiana has a poorly controlled outbreak,” Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady told reporters today. Iowa, Missouri and parts of downstate Illinois are under less COVID control than Chicago, Arwady said.
Illinois’ statewide positivity rate has climbed a full percentage point in the past week alone, from 3.5 percent on Oct. 7 to 4.5 percent today. See the latest city and state COVID figures in the charts below.
Chicago is still below its target rate of 5 percent; it’s at 4.4 percent this week, a slight increase from last week’s 4.3. The average daily case count rose 10 percent in the city, up to 364 from 332 last week.
“I expect this number to continue to increase, and in fact, I expect that this number will cross the 400 mark, likely this week,” Arwady said. “That certainly is cause for
Chicago made it official Tuesday, adding neighboring Indiana to its emergency travel order that requires travelers returning to the city from there to stay inside for two weeks because of high COVID-19 case counts.
The Hoosier state’s inclusion on Chicago’s self-quarantine list was expected.
The city last week “strongly advised” Chicago residents against traveling to Indiana, pointing to the fact the state had already passed the bench mark of more than 15 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over a seven-day period that warrants getting added.
“I am very concerned that Indiana is a state that is wishing that COVID were over, and it’s not,” city Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said
CHICAGO — Public health officials Tuesday added Indiana and three other states to the list of coronavirus hotspots on the city’s emergency travel quarantine list.
The travel restriction requirements for folks traveling to and from Indiana, North Carolina, Rhode Island and New Mexico take effect Friday.
Chicago public health commissioner Allison Arwady on Tuesday acknowledged the “obviously” significant addition if Indiana’s addition to the travel quarantine list. She stressed that the mandatory 14-day quarantine applies to anyone traveling between Indiana and Chicago for non-work purposes. Students, regular commuters, essential workers and folks traveling for medical care and parental custody are exempt from the order.
“Indiana has a poorly contained outbreak,” Arwady said Tuesday. She urged Chicagoans to avoid traveling to Indiana and Wisconsin since both states have “poorly contained” coronavirus outbreaks.
The quarantine mandate currently applies to the following locales: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi,
As the world slowly gets moving again, people are itching to get out of their homes for a weekend. Even if you aren’t yet ready for a huge excursion or a complicated travel plan, Abbeville, South Carolina may help satisfy that craving; it’s a small town with a big personality, plenty of charm, and undiscovered wonders. There are many reasons to visit, but we decided to just list off six:

Abbeville is located in South Carolina’s Old 96 District Tourism, which includes Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, and McCormick counties. The city of Abbeville rests halfway in between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina or about a two-and-a-half hour drive from either. It’s a bearable enough road trip for many, while still giving visitors plenty of time and energy left in the day after they arrive. No hassle with airports or day-long drives
Charles Wilford’s grandfather was not going to let him run the streets. And that’s how he learned to cook.
“You see, my grandfather had a tight grip on me and kept me inside with my grandmother, and I would sit in the kitchen and was amazed by how they would create meals for the family,” recalled Wilford, who in high school went on to work in one of Baton Rouge’s finest restaurants, Jake Staples’ The Place, under the tutelage of chef Amelia Griffin, known as Miss Maude.
“Miss Maude was one of the best in Louisiana,” Wilford said. “I would even put her in the same company as chef Leah Chase, of New Orleans.”
Following a stint in the Navy, Wilford found a new mentor at The Country Club of Louisiana where chef Sonny Creole “put me on the right track and the love for my craft today.”
