Holidays: Britons ditch holiday favourites in 2021 for these top five destinations | Travel News | Travel

Earlier this year, thousands of Britons had their holiday plans cancelled as the pandemic pulled the breaks on international travel. Instead, Britons decided to go on holiday in the UK, ditching flights overseas for something closer to home. But with many missing the opportunity to travel overseas, Britons are looking to broaden their horizons and truing out some new destinations.

1. Orlando

The USA has been out of bounds to Britons for the majority of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, if the country opens its borders to Britons, it’s looking as though it’s likely to be a popular choice.

Mr Thorne explained that Florida is very popular with families, especially due to the abundance of theme parks.

He said: “After a year spent at home, some parents are keen to make new childhood memories with their kids and have perhaps been saving throughout 2020 in order to

German travel startup Getyourguide lets go of a sixth of staff

BERLIN, Oct 14 (Reuters) – Getyourguide, one of Berlin’s best-backed travel startups, said on Wednesday it has laid off 90 people, or a sixth of its staff, after the coronavirus pandemic hit its business of tours and trips.

A spokesman confirmed a report in tech publication Gruenderszene on the job cuts, which come barely a year and a half after the company raised nearly $500 million from investors led by Softbank’s Vision Fund.

“As our view of the market’s path to recovery has come into focus, it’s become clear that it was necessary for us to adapt our company to the present reality,” Getyourguide said.

As well as being forced into a go-slow by the pandemic, Europe’s travel tech industry has chafed at the terms offered by Google – the search engine it relies on heavily for online referrals – urging the Alphabet unit to offer more flexibility on payments

Hawaii’s Royal Kona Resort to reopen after 7-month closure

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — The Royal Kona Resort on Hawaii island plans to reopen to guests following a seven-month closure amid the coronavirus pandemic and a multi-million dollar renovation.

The three-tower resort overlooking Kailua Bay on the western side of the Big Island expects to open Thursday, West Hawaii Today reported Tuesday.

The Royal Kona is the only property in the area expected to reopen on the same day the state launches a program enabling travelers to avoid a 14-day quarantine by taking COVID-19 tests before arriving in Hawaii.

Since the implementation of the quarantine mandated by Democratic Gov. David Ige in March, visitor arrivals to the Big Island have dropped 97% and hotel occupancy has hovered at around 30%, the newspaper reported.

Royal Kona Resort General Manager Jay Rubenstein said there have been “quite a few” reservations already at the 428-room property owned by Honolulu-based Hogan Hospitality Group.

In pictures: How coronavirus is sending cruise ships to an early grave

These are no rust-buckets or clunkers from another era. Cut down in their prime, the relics of five former glistening ships make a pitiful sight in their final port of call.

The death throes are heartbreaking. In the wheelhouse, frantic commands are hollered in polyglot tongues as the man at the helm points the bow towards a narrow channel at the Aliaga ship breakers yard. The ships are driven at five knots – about 5 miles per hour – onto the beach where they shudder to a halt, their steel frames groaning and grinding in futile protest. The engines are shut down and the anchor is dropped to make the ship steadfast in its last resting place.

Cruise ships normally have a lifespan of 40 years, but as the pandemic engulfed the globe, the cruise industry became paralysed. Putting a whole new meaning to “throwaway culture”, ships still in
